Cloud Services FAQs
Cloud IT services are resources like storage, software and infrastructure that is delivered on-demand over the internet, eliminating the need for owning and maintaining physical hardware and servers.
Some examples of cloud services include software as a service (SaaS), infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), and things like cloud storage, communication tools and data/CRM platforms.
Examples:
SaaS: Microsoft 365 Online, Google Docs
IaaS: Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure
PaaS: Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop
Cloud storage: SharePoint, Dropbox, Google Drive
Communication tools: Teams, Zoom, WhatsApp
Data/CRM platforms: SAP, Salesforce
Moving to the cloud offers many benefits, such as cost reduction, improved security, scalability and better collaboration with your colleagues. It also allows greater flexibility by being able to access many platforms or resources from anywhere and reliability due to dedicated teams employed to maintain these services with failsafe mechanisms in place.
The right answer depends on your business, and the best way to determine it is through a conversation about your workloads, your team's ways of working, your security requirements and your budget. As a brief overview:
- Public cloud (AWS, Azure and similar): infrastructure hosted and managed by a major cloud provider, shared across many customers. The benefits are scalability, cost flexibility and access to a vast ecosystem of services. Most businesses do not need to own or manage servers at all in this model.
- Private cloud: dedicated infrastructure, either hosted in a data centre or on your own premises, used exclusively by your organisation. Offers greater control and can be the right choice for businesses with specific security, compliance or performance requirements.
- Hybrid cloud: a combination of public and private infrastructure, allowing workloads to move between environments based on need. Increasingly the model of choice for businesses that want flexibility without sacrificing control over sensitive data or critical systems.
There is no universally right answer, and the boundaries between these models are blurring all the time. We can help you work through the options and find the approach that fits where your business is now and where it is heading.
Yes, in most cases. Our standard approach is to run an overlap, keeping your legacy applications live and accessible on the existing system whilst the migration to the cloud takes place in the background. Your team can continue working normally throughout, and there is no risk of data loss during the transition. Only once the new environment has been fully tested and confirmed does the legacy system get decommissioned.
Some applications may require a brief window of downtime to complete the migration, and where that is the case, we will tell you in advance and plan it for the least disruptive time possible.
Yes. Many of the sectors we work with, including financial services, legal, property development, accountancy, pharma/biotech and manufacturing, operate in heavily regulated environments with specific compliance obligations. We understand what those environments require and work within your guidelines throughout.
Whether it is data residency requirements, specific encryption standards, audit logging or sector-specific regulatory frameworks, we factor those requirements in from the outset. If you are unsure whether your cloud setup meets your compliance obligations, we are happy to take a look.
With unmanaged cloud hosting, you are responsible for the infrastructure once it is provisioned: configuration, security patching, monitoring, performance management and troubleshooting all fall to you. It can work well for businesses with a dedicated in-house technical team who are comfortable managing cloud infrastructure directly.
With managed cloud hosting, a provider like us takes on those responsibilities. We handle the configuration, keep everything patched and up to date, monitor performance and respond to issues. For most businesses we work with, managed cloud hosting is the right choice. Unless you have a skilled team equipped and available to manage your cloud environment on an ongoing basis, handing that responsibility to a managed provider gives you better security, better performance and significantly less operational overhead.
