The Final Step

Raja is Managing Director of The Final Step, which he founded in 1987. He has considerable experience in advising organisations on how IT can most effectively support their business objectives. Having started playing with computers before the first IBM PC was introduced in 1981, he has probably forgotten more than he remembers! Raja’s first degree was in science, and he subsequently studied business as well. In 1996, after 14 exams in 7 months, he qualified as a Microsoft Certified Network Engineer and a Novell Certified Engineer. He has lectured in IT at London′s Guildhall University.

TWO MINUTE INTERVIEW

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?

Not much time available with a three year old daughter, but I really enjoy cycling. Growing up in South Wales meant cycling was hard work, but great fun going downhill as long as you watched out for all the cattle grids! I’ve done the London to Brighton charity bike ride several times.

What would you have done if you hadn’t gone into IT?

I would have ended up running another business, probably involving some sort of analytical or technical work. I enjoy problem-solving and I’ve been told I’m good in a crisis! I think it’s in my nature to want to be my own boss.

Likes or dislikes?

I like Laurel & Hardy – real pioneers, and Hal Roach was very innovative. In the office, I’m notorious for my coffee consumption and love espresso. My desk is closest to the coffee machine! One of the things that gets my hackles up is poor customer service – and despite being born in India, I really don’t like the heat – 25 degrees C is hot enough!

Earliest memory?

I’m not sure if this is a memory or an old family photo – I remember lying on the petrol tank of my Dad’s motorbike, holding onto the petrol cap whilst he was riding around (without my Mum knowing, I suspect!).
