Apple releases OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion

Mountain LionOn Wednesday last, 25th July, Apple released the latest of its big cat series of OS releases, Mountain Lion. While the name might suggest an incremental upgrade from OSX Lion, this is in fact a major update which brings a lot of features over from iOS including popular apps such as Notes, Reminders and Notification Centre. Mountain Lion also sees further integration of iCloud into the OS as well a new security feature Gatekeeper which restricts app installs.

AirPlay mirroring, one of the most powerful features of Apple’s most recent iOS devices also make it debut on OSX. This allows for wireless sharing of a presentation, video or your desktop (and including stereo audio) to a TV or projector attached to an AppleTV. Making the little black box very appealing for any conference room.

For those of us who prefer, or are required, to use Windows on their Macs, you will be happy to hear that Boot Camp will continue to support all existing Boot Camp installations (Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows Vista or Windows 7). This is important as all Macs will now come with Mountain Lion preinstalled.

Mountain Lion is available exclusively from the Mac App Store and costs only £13.99. You can find a full list of supported devices on Apple’s site.
