LinkedIn passwords compromised

The social networking site, LinkedIn, have confirmed that users’ passwords and security have been “compromised” by hackers. As many as six million passwords have been accessed and published in encrypted form on hackers forums. LinkedIn have said those passwords will no longer be valid and are sending instructions to their users on how to reset them. See here and here for further info. However, it is advisable to reset your LinkedIn password as soon as possible and to reset it again over the next few days. If you have used that password anywhere else it is also advisable to reset those passwords as well and use a unique password for each. See our previous tip on using strong passwords.

To reset your LinkedIn password:

  • Login to your account at www.linkedin.com
  • At the top right click on the drop down arrow next to your account name and select “Settings”. You may need to login again.
  • Near the top left of your profile, click on the word “change” next to Password and follow the instructions
